Review: Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing

I read tons of reviews and saw a whole heap on youtube prior to purchasing my first Clarisonic Mia. I was so lucky and blessed to be taken to Disneyland (for the first time) in LA for my 21st birthday last year (December, although my birthday was in August...). Obviously I HAD to shop at Sephora whilst I was in the states, which was where I made my purchase (and a lot more other cosmetics). It was USD$119 plus tax (can't remember how much tax it was, as tax varies depending on the county).

So I have been using the clarisonic mia for the past 4-5 months, and I LOVE it. I purchased the blue one only because it was the only one that included two brush heads. The reason why I think the other ones were newer models was because they only had the sensitive brush heads, and I can't find any clarisonic mias that come with two brush heads now.

I live with my parents for half of the week and with my boyfriend for the other half of the week, and having to remember to take this back and forth is quite a chore, so I decided to get another one from eBay. I'm 99.9% sure it's genuine, even though the boxes are different and the seller only had 1 feedback (which was positive). I googled image "Clarisonic Mia packaging" and both packaging came up, so that's always a plus right? I also compared both mias and they were identical, except for the serial code on the bottom of the mia and the colour.

In the blue clarisonic box, these items were included:
  • Clarisonic Mia (blue) with one speed
  • Universal Voltage pLink Charger
  • Deep pore cleansing brush head
  • Sensitive brush head
  • Trial size cleanser
Everything was included in the pink clarisonic box except the deep pore cleansing brush head.

When I started using the mia, I went straight for the deep pore cleansing brush head, as I do not have sensitive skin, and I really wanted to get all the black heads out. The only skin irritation I had was red patches around my cheeks. It was really quite minor as it went away after an hour or two and my skin was not raw or sensitive to the touch. I think it was due to me exerting too much pressure.

I used to think using a makeup remover wipe was enough to remove all traces of foundation, but I was oh-so-wrong. After using the Clarisonic Mia, the brush went a orangey from my makeup. So it's quite important to wash the brush thoroughly for the next use.

I also used the trial size cleanser (the tube in the pink clarisonic picture) that came with my blue clarisonic mia. On the tube it says
"All/Sensitive Skin Gentle Hydro Cleanser
Remove impurities while soothing and comforting
Aloe, Cucumber, Japanese Green Tea"

To be honest, I don't think highly of it. It's an ok product that didn't make me want to re-purchase. The Sephora sales assistant told me that you can use any cleanser except grainy ones (i.e. exfoliants), as it can tear the skin and damage the machine. So after I finished my tube, I used my Dermalogica dermal clay cleanser with my mia, and have been using it ever since. I think they work well together for my skin.

After 3-4 months of using the deep pore cleansing brush head once a day, I threw it out and used a delicate brush head that I purchased from eBay (it was a bulk-buy and I bought 4 of them!). The difference in 'harshness' was quite noticeable at first. I actually preferred the deep pore cleansing brush, as I felt like it did a better job in getting all the gunk out from my pores. However, after using the delicate brush head for a month, I like it too. It also does a good job in removing all traces of makeup that my makeup remover wipes couldn't. The result is smoother skin and smaller pores.

Overall, I highly recommend the Clarisonic Mia, as it has become a product I cannot live without.

  1. Thanks for this review! I have been thinking about getting a Clarisonic (still have a little research to do!) but I love my Dermal Clay Cleanser, so was worried that if I got one I may not be able to use that!

Can I ask, how often do you use your Clarisonic? I use a daily exfoliant in the mornings. Would I be better to use the Clarisonic just in the evenings and continue with that, or do away with it and just use the Clarisonic twice? :)

  2. The dermalogica dermal clay cleanser and clarisonic definitely go hand in hand. I normally use the exfoliant in the morning (without the clarisonic) and the clarisonic + dermal clay cleanser in the shower later in the day or evening
