My Current Favourites: Eyeliner

I was meant to publish a "My Current Favourites" post once a week, but I kinda got busy with being stuck in Tasmania with no laptop and camera. My apologies if you've been waiting for another installment of "My Current Favourites"!

This post is about my favourite eyeliners. I have four that I would love to share with you.
You may have noticed that my favourite eyeliners consist of gels and liquids. I don't like pencil/crayon eyeliners because they either tug on my eyelid or they smudge and fade too easily. I also only use black eyeliners because I always have and am too lazy to venture into other colours, as I don't wear eyeshadows and I think black is a great colour to enhance my lashes (considering my lashes are already black). Anyway, onto my favourite eyeliners... From top to bottom, and then left to right, Lancome Artliner in Noir, Lancome Liner Plume in Noir, Sleek Dip-It eyeliner in Black, and MUA Gel Eyeliner in Underground.

Lancome Artliner has been my favourite eyeliner for a long time now. It has a foam tip which makes application really easy. Before I discovered this eyeliner, I was using a pencil eyeliner (I think it was a Maybelline one), and was horrible at using liquid. I tried using one once (can't remember which one it was though) and was completely hopeless at it. I think it was too liquidy and it just went everywhere. This eyeliner is amateur proof. I did not have any trouble transiting from pencil to liquid when I started using this artliner because it's got quite a fine tip making it easy to draw a thin line with (it's easier to draw a thin line and then thicken it than the reverse). This artliner is waterproof enough for me and creates such a deep, dark, pigmented black line. Despite the hefty price tag of USD$29.50, I have quite a few backups of this eyeliner... it's THAT awesome.

Sorry about the unfocused picture, but I'm still an amateur when it comes to using my Olympus Pen Mini. I wanted to show you the tip of the Lancome Liner Plume, and I guess this picture will have to do. I received this as part of my birthday present back in August from my friends, as I had the Lancome Artliner on my wishlist but apparently Australia does not stock it, so the sales assistant conned convinced them to get this eyeliner instead, claiming its the equivalent. Well, I can say this is NOT an equivalent. Comparing the two, this eyeliner does not create the same deep, dark, pigmented black line (swatches to come). The saving grace of this eyeliner is that you can layer it to get a darker line. It's thin felt-tip-like end makes it also extremely easy to apply and fool proof. Although, it can smudge if you rub it hard enough. According to beautyheaven, this eyeliner's RRP is a hefty $49.

Yay! A much better focused picture! This eyeliner by Sleek was given to me by the lovely Kay from BaniniBeauty as part of our Christmas swap hosted by Jasmine from Sweetaholic Beauty (you can read more about the swap here). I took this with me to Tasmania (haven't used it prior to the trip), and was pleasantly surprised with it! Like the Lancome Artliner, I was able to draw an amazingly pigmented black line. I used it on the other edge of my waterline and it stayed all day! No smudges, no fading! It has a stiff brush with a tapered, pointed end to create a thin line. It is really important to wipe excess eyeliner off against the inside of the bottle top edge (if that makes any sense) if you want to create a thin line, or you'll end up with a thick blob at the starting point.

The last eyeliner I'd like to share is the MUA Gel Eyeliner in Underground. I purchased this eyeliner when they had a 45% sale with free shipping (read about my haul here). I didn't think much of it the first few times I used it. But as I broke through the surface of the eyeliner, I started to like it. It's pigmentation is great... but the brush that came with it isn't. The brush forms part of the top handle of the gel eyeliner. It picks up too much product, and as a result doesn't enable me to create thin lines around my eyes. However, when I used my favourite MAC eyeliner brush (read here for more details), I found that I could create a thin line which lasts all day!

Here is a swatch of the eyeliners. As you can see, the Lancome Liner Plume is significantly less pigmented than the others, but it can be built up. I purposely smudged the bottom half of the swatches so you can see what happens if you rub your eyes. The Lancome Artliner and Sleek Dip-It are winners in the smudging contest! So if you have a habit of rubbing your eyes, but would love to line them and not look like a raccoon at the end of the day, I recommend either one!

I also decided to do a water test. I flicked some water onto the swatches, and rubbed the bottom half down. I then patted dry the top half with a tissue. None of them were smudge-proof when exposed to water, which is fine because I tend not to cry and rub my eyes simultaneously. But all of them did pretty well when you patted them dry with a tissue. Impressive, isn't it?!

What are your favourite eyeliners?

  1. They look like some great eyeliners! I too always liked liquid and gel liners better than pencil because pencils were so dry and tugged during application. I found that my favourite liquid eyeliner is the FOA one. I'm pretty useless at eyeliner application but even I can master it!

The best smudgeproof eyeliner I've found is Essence's gel eyeliner.
But I'm like you, and like the felt tip applicator ! :)

    1. Hahahaha! I don't normally rub my eyes because I started wearing glasses since I was very young, and it's kind of hard to rub my eyes when I wear glasses, I end up hitting my glasses and then realise I have to take them off.

  5. Haven't tried any of these! I'm currently using Maybelline gel liner and KPalette liquid eyeliner... I like both a lot but I think I'll stick with KPalette or Dollywink after I finish as it's just quicker than gel liner in my opinion! You have some great options there to play around with though!

    1. Rarely even wear them?! They're an essential part of my makeup routine! I guess it's easier to use eyeliner to shape my eyes than go for plastic surgery? :P

    1. It's definitely expensive but it does last for a long time. I don't think I've ever had to throw one out because I've used it up (threw one out because I've had it opened for a very long time).
