Review & Swatches: Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stains were mentioned in my current lip products favourites that I published about a week ago (read here). The main reason why I'm writing this post is because there were a few of you who expressed their interest in seeing my small YSL Glossy Stains collection.

With flash - a more true to colour photo than the other especially #7.
I only have six glossy stains in my collection. For convenience, I have included the shade number in all the photos on this post.

Starting off with swatches...

I failed at trying to capture the glitter particles in some of the swatches.

As you may have noticed, all 6 glossy stains are extremely "glossy" and extremely pigmented.

You may be wondering "How strong is the staining power of these glossy stains?" I left the swatches on the underside of my arm for 5 minutes (yes, I timed it) before wiping them off with a baby wipe, and this is the result...
Amazing staining power isn't it?! It may look quite concerning that Glossy Stain #8 has a yellow-orangey stain, but it really does not translate on the lips. I mainly use #8 as a stain because it's far too red for me to feel comfortable leaving the house!

So these are the reasons why I justified spending USD$32 on each of these bad boys (I refuse to pay the crazy Australian prices of $50 per glossy stain)...
  • Staining power. I used to absolutely hate the feeling of product on my lips, and always left the house with nude lips until I started using these YSL glossy stains. I used to wear it (especially the more bold colours) as a stain by applying a coat on my lips and then wiping it off about 10 minutes later. I love how the stain lasts for ages, as I also dislike reapplying makeup throughout the day. Random fact about me - I don't carry any makeup in my handbag.
  • Packaging. I love the packaging! Although it may be a bit bulky, I love the combination of the gold cap with the red YSL logo and the black body with a window, which enables you to see how much product and what colour the glossy stains are. I also love the doe foot like applicator, as it really does make application a breeze. The applicator is flat and has a pointed end, enabling you to maneuver product into the right spot (i.e. the corners of your lips). It also picks up just enough product for each application.
  • Texture. I love how it is not at all sticky. I cannot stand sticky lip products, lip glosses being the main culprit.
  • Scent. If you are sensitive to strong scents or if you are not a big fan, then the YSL glossy stains may not be your cup of tea. I can't actually pinpoint what the glossy stains smell like but it has a fruity/floral smell and it's very strong. Some have described it as a rosy scent, I describe it as a YSL scent lol
I've read a few bad reviews on YSL Glossy Stain #19 because when first applied, it doesn't give an even coverage, and it's an overall weird colour. I found that if you leave it alone, it does even out over time (about 5 minutes). However I have to admit that it's not a colour that suits many people (including me), and the stain isn't very noticeable on naturally pigmented lips.

If I had to pick one out of the six I have, I think #7 is my favourite. I love it as a stain and it also looks great on my lips without having to wipe it off. It's not too bold of a colour for me.

Have you tried the YSL Glossy Stains? Which is your favourite?

    1. I'm actually not sure what they go for in Singapore. I wasn't looking for glossy stains when I was there last.
