Review: Maybelline Lasting Drama Pen Gel Liner

I think this is the first time in the history of Shrinking Wallet where two product reviews are posted in a row! But I felt the need to share my thoughts on the rather magical products that I've purchased from Singapore, so that we (anyone not living in singapore) can all whinge about why our countries don't stock amazing products (I think us Aussies suffer the most... we get hammered on prices AND lack of fantastic, magical products that would potentially change our lives!)

Today, I've got a review on the Maybelline Lasting Drama Pen Gel Liner in black for you. It was a new product when I purchased it in Singapore back in March 2013 (you can see what other goodies I purchased here).

Maybelline Singapore marketed this as a smudge-proof, long lasting gel eyeliner in a pen! It looks like a really sleek pen with a hot pink, metallic-ish cap that screws on, which is awesome as the cap won't fall out as easily as ones that you click down.

To get product out, you have to twist the end of the pen. The tip of the eyeliner pen is... really hard to describe. It's not a brush bristle end neither is it felt-tip. It's sort of like a soft tube that is bendable and has an angled tip.

With a bit of eyeliner coming out.
In terms of ease of application, I found it relatively easy. However, it did take a bit of getting used to. And similar to products in this type of packaging with the twist-clicky end, it did take quite a lot of twisty-clicks for the product to first come out.  I really like how easy it is to clean up excess product if you twist-clicked one too much, unlike products with the brush tips. All I had to do was take a tissue and wipe off the end before re-capping the pen.

I really like how opaque it is after just one swipe. It definitely did live up to my expectations, as I was expecting the opacity of a gel liner because it is after all part of it's name.

I did the smudge-proof test straight after I swatched it, and was surprised at how much it smudged because I did not get raccoon eyes at the end of the day when wearing this eyeliner.

I then did a waterproof test. I ran the back of my hand under water, and then dabbed the area dry with some tissue. It did fade a little but I don't think it's very noticeable.

I then did a smudge-proof test again (on the left of the swatch). This time it only smudged a tiny bit compared to before.

I then decided to redo the smudge-proof test (without exposure to water). But before I could do that, i had to literally scrub the back of my hand with a makeup removing wipe. I used the green Johnson's & Johnson's makeup removing wipes. I'm not sure if these wipes suck or this eyeliner just sticks to your skin really well... or if it's a combination of both. I've never really had a problem with those wipes before.

I tried to draw the thinnest line I could with the pen eyeliner, and I'm rather pleased! I could probably draw a thinner line with a traditional gel eyeliner pot and a brush but I normally don't go for the really thin line look anyway. Plus, by using this gel pen, it takes the hassle out of having to wash an extra brush.

Unlike the previous test, I waited about 3 minutes before trying to smudge the liner (right side of the swatches). I'm so pleased with the result, as this truly reflects on how the eyeliner wore on my eyes (even though I don't tend to rub my eyes anyway). But for all you eye-rubbing people out there, I think this eyeliner may be for you!

I really like this pen gel liner, and am crossing both my fingers and toes that they bring this to Australia. Hopefully it'll start popping up on ebay or sasa.com!

  2. This looks like a really handy product! I love gel liner but sometimes it's such a hassle with the separate brush.

    1. I agree! I hate washing brushes (and travelling with brushes), so this is definitely a handy one.

  4. This sounds nice! I only own one black eye liner (liquid) as I don't wear it super often but I am thinking of getting a pencil one too. It's a shame it's not out here!

  5. If you think in Australia is bad, it is because you don't know Brasil, we just get a few american brands (the easiest to get) and still, 3/4 times more expensive /: And never all the range of colors and etc...
