Review: Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair

Dermalogica's Overnight Retinol Repair is the latest addition to its AGE Smart range. It is formulated to accelerate skin renewal, reverse signs of photo-aging, improve skin tone and increase skin firmness.

The key ingredient to this treatment is 0.5% retinol, pure Vitamin A, which reverses both intrinsic aging (genetics) and extrinsic aging (environmental). Other active ingredients include peptides to boost collagen formation, treat wrinkles and firm skin, Vitamin C to support collagen synthesis and antioxidant protection to combat free radicals, bioenergised Copper Amino Acid Complex to reduce visible wrinkles and increase collagen and elastin production, ceramides and polysaccharides to restore the skin's barrier properties and increase moisture within the skin to soften lines, and natural botanicals lavender and licorice root to help calm and soothe irritated skin.

I have used retinol based products previously not so much for anti-aging purposes, but more for skin renewal to reduce the appearance of acne scars. I would get patches of dry, flaky skin in the morning and extremely oily skin towards the end of the day, as my skin would over produce oil to combat the dryness in the morning.

I had to mentally prepare myself for days and weeks of skin craziness prior to incorporating Dermalogica's Overnight Retinol Repair. However, I was pleased that it was all in vain because I never did experience the dry, flaky skin to begin with.

It is recommended to start with small concentrations of retinol application to allow your skin to build up natural retinoid receptors and a tolerance to the ingredients. This is done with mixing the retinol with the buffer cream.

The Buffer Cream contains 8% aloe vera extract, which soothes and moisturizes your skin. I started off with one part retinol cream and three parts buffer cream, gradually increasing the concentration of retinol until the buffer cream was no longer required. The buffer cream is definitely an amazing product for the introduction of retinol cream to your skincare product, as it enables you to control the concentration of retinol.

As I am still fairly young, and blessed with wrinkle-free skin (for now), I cannot comment on how well the retinol cream works on wrinkles. I can however say that my skin feels firmer and smoother since using this retinol cream, and my pores seem to have shrunk a bit too. Unfortunately, I still have acne scars (they are quite old - 8 years, but they are now very faint).

The Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair and Buffer Cream is available at authorised Dermalogica spa, salons and skin centres nationwide, as well as online for $135.
