Review: Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant

I'm desperately trying to catch up on PR products received. So a heads up on an influx of products that were provided to me for review purposes. As always, these are my honest opinions, and some products which may work well for me, may not be as effective for you and vice versa.

Today, I am reviewing the Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant. I was first introduced to this exfoliant quite a few months ago, when Dermalogica had a pop up stall at Sydney Westfield. They were doing free face mapping, and I was recommended the gentle cream exfoliant to try for my oily-combo-acne-prone skin.

The gentle cream exfoliant is a "lactic and hydroxy acid exfoliating masque for dramatic skin smoothing". It is a non-abrasive exfoliation treatment that helps stimulate cell renewal and improve skin texture. It also contains aloe vera to help calm and soothe the skin.

I was told not to let the word "gentle" in its name fool me, as it's meant to be a powerful exfoliant.

Not going to lie, I was skeptical. It doesn't have the normal gritty bits that I associate with exfoliants. Instead, it has the lactic and hydroxy acid that act as exfoliants. I'm also so used to have an exfoliating scrub, where you manually scrub the dead skin off your face instead of a masque, which is great for all you lazy bones out there (myself included). The only issue is remembering to put this on 10-15 minutes before my shower (you can obviously use it any other time, but I find using this before my shower so much easier to wash off - not implying that it's hard to wash off, I just hate getting water all over my vanity/sink).

As one would normally use a masque, you apply an even layer over cleansed skin, wait the prescribed time (10-15 minutes for this one) and wash off with warm water.

Dermalogica does warn a mild stinging may occur, and I normally don't feel stinging when products say that they do, but I totally felt something with this! It wasn't painful or uncomfortable, as it didn't last long.

Unlike a traditional masque, this one didn't harden and didn't feel like you'd crack your face in pieces when you talked or laughed.

It only faded away slightly, as can be seen and compared in the pictures above.

The exfoliant does leave my skin feeling nice and smooth, which is exactly what it claims to do. However, I do miss the manual scrubbing/gritty feeling of a normal exfoliant. There's nothing better than the feeling of freshly scrubbed skin!

If you decide to purchase this or get a sample, please remember to wear sunscreen or limit sun exposure, as this "gentle" cream exfoliant may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun.
