Review: Rimmel Volume Shake Mascara

Rimmel has released a new mascara call the "Volume Shake" mascara. The whole idea behind this mascara is the ability to refresh your mascara (i.e. make it more creamy/wet) by shaking it. It's a world's first patented shaking system. Rimmel also spent a long time (try 10 years!) researching to master the water-gel formula, which is made from a unique combination of water and waxes for supposedly smooth, zero-clump, smudge free mascara.

My first impression when I held this mascara in my hands was "Wow! This mascara is so heavy!", and I did get a kick of shaking it like a polaroid picture.

The mascara wand is slightly oversized and fluffy, which would theoretically be perfect for volumising lashes. I do have issues getting to my tiny corner lashes with this wand, but then again, I have the same issue with most wands (damn you tiny lashes!!).

The formula is (as expected) quite wet, especially after my "shaking it like a polaroid picture" fun. I have used it a few times after without shaking, and the formula hasn't really dried down. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad. Perhaps more bad than good, I guess considering this...

Clumps galore! I cannot get this mascara to work on me without clumping. It's really frustrating as it is meant to be a "clump free" mascara. It even says it on the tube!

As I've never ever been happy with the way this mascara looks on my lashes, I've always had to go in with a lash brush to remove the clumps and then apply another coat (or five) of another mascara to make my lashes look present. Therefore, I can't comment on it's smudge-free properties.

If you have lashes like mine - short, sparse, stubby. I probably wouldn't recommend this one. However, if you would like to give it a go anyway, I'd refrain shaking this mascara too much.
