Review: Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair 1%

The Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair 1% is a professional strength retinol treatment that is new addition to Dermalogica's AGE smart range.

It is a customisable formula, as you can dial down the concentration with the use of the buffer cream, which is included in the box. It claims to reduce the appearance of skin ageing, such as fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and combat free radical damage.

The key ingredients are:

1. Pure Vitamin A, a highly active form of retinol to reduce the appearance of skin ageing.

2. Squalene from Brazilian Sugar Cane to restore moisture and suppleness.

3. Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 and TAUT Peptides to minimise the appearance of wrinkles.

4. Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (antioxidant Vitamin C) to reduce the appearance of skin discoloration.

5. Active Polysaccharides to hydrate and prevent water loss in skin, which helps to soften fine lines.

6. Licorice extract to help calm irritation and provide antioxidant power.

I love that the retinol is packaged in a pump dispensed bottle, as it is easy to dispense an adequate amount of product. I also like that they have included a buffer cream so that you can customise the strength of the retinol. They recommend mixing 1 part retinol to 3 parts buffer cream until your skin acclimatises to it.

As I've used retinol in my nightly skincare, I used a tiny bit as the last step to my nightly skincare routine (to make up for not diluting it). It still works extremely well... in fact too well, as it dried out my skin on the first night. I ended up using a thick moisturiser with SPF during the day and halting the use of the retinol until my skin stopped peeling after a few nights.

After the second use, my skin did not peel. However, I still only use it every few nights, as it is quite potent.

Thankfully, I do not have any wrinkles or fine lines (yet), however I have noticed my skin has become softer with use, and has evened out my skin tone slightly.

I should note that I did stop using this when I started getting hormonal acne over the past week or so, as I did not want to aggravate my skin. However, I am looking forward to including this back into my nightly skincare routine, and hopefully it will help assist in getting rid of any scars left from this month's hormonal acne!
