Review: Dermalogica Precleanse Balm

Double cleansing is something I do on days when I wear makeup (i.e. every week day). I normally use a makeup removing wipe as Step 1 of cleansing, followed by a traditional cleanser to remove any traces of dirt (and cleansing product from the makeup removing wipe). I have been using wipes for years - ever since I've started to wear makeup in high school. I have never gotten fully gotten into micellar water, only because I go through so many cotton pads to remove foundation alone that it is borderline wasteful.

Dermalogica Precleanse Balm is a water-activated cleanser that transforms from a balm to an oil. It is a new take on Dermalogica's Precleanse Oil. The Oil is meant to be formulated for combination to oily skin, and the balm for dehydrated or dry skin. For reference, my skin type is dehydrated oily.

I have been replacing the makeup removing wipes with the Precleanse Balm in Stage 1 of my everyday double cleansing routine for the past couple of weeks. Keeping reading for my thoughts.

The precleanse balm comes with a cleansing mitt. To be honest, I didn't have high hopes because it reminded me of the Foreo (read review here), and I was just not impressed.

The cleansing mitt is double sided and was made for enhanced cleansing and exfoliation. I find myself only using one side though. It is brilliant for cleansing, but I'm skeptical about the exfoliation claim as it is very soft and gentle on the skin (maybe I'm just too used to gritty exfoliates).

I am ridiculously impressed with this cleansing balm. Normally when I use a makeup removing wipe (followed by a cleanser), I will have to use a eye makeup remover to remove the smudged mascara/eyeliner around my eyes. This cleansing balm removes ALL traces of waterproof make up, including my normal 10 coats of waterproof mascara and eyeliner. It does not sting my eye (unlike my Wotnot makeup removing wipes) and no tugging required. It melts effortlessly into an oil and lifts makeup so quickly.

I like that it is a balm, as it is easy to dispense on the mitt. I would imagine it being very travel friendly too, as you would not have to worry about any spills or leaks. However, I am interested to see if it melts and becomes more liquidy when the weather warms up.

Having fairly oily skin, I thought this might be too "oily/hydrating" for my skin. However, I was quite surprised when my skin felt a little dry after using this. I definitely needed to moisturise after (maybe it is the colder weather?). It was nothing a good few drops of facial oil can't fix though (my go-to is rosehip oil).

The Dermalogica Precleanse Balm is a life changer. It is so easy to use and I absolutely love that I do not have to use eye makeup remover to remove stubborn waterproof mascara. I actually cannot wait to use up all my makeup removing wipes, so I can permanently incorporate this precleanse balm into my skincare routine.

It is on the pricey side at $65.00 for 90ml, but it comes with a cleansing mitt and a little goes a long way.
